Employment Opportunity Director of Human Resources

The Opportunity

We have an exciting opportunity to join the Northland School Division as Director of Human Resources. The start date will be July 1st, 2026.

The Division is seeking someone with human resources skills, a passion for customer service, strong interpersonal skills and a desire to grow as a leader. This individual should be skilled in knowledge of the Collective Agreement, labour law and the Education Act. Reporting directly to the Superintendent, the Director of Human Resources will provide leadership and oversight for all human resource functions across the division.

The successful candidate will support the division's commitment to excellence in education by leading recruitment, retention, labour relations, and employee wellness. The Director of Human Resources will work collaboratively with the leadership team with a solution-oriented approach.

This position will manage the human resources for the 470 employees. The successful candidate will be expected to travel as required to schools, Edmonton and Peace River, or to other locations as needed for Board meetings, conferences, or educational opportunities. This position is hybrid; the successful candidate can work remotely, or in our offices in Edmonton or Peace River.

The Organization

With approximately 1,650 students in 18 schools, Northland School Division is situated in some of the most stunning areas in northern Alberta. Covering 288,347 square kilometres. The schools are located near mountains, lakes, rivers, forests, and wetlands in Treaty 6 and 8 Territories, where there is a high respect for the history, language, and culture in these territories. Responsibilities

  • Recruitment and retention
  • Work with the ATA on certified issues
  • Application of the Collective Agreement to certified staff and policies
  • Staff disciplinary issues
  • Investigations
  • Monitoring staff supervision and evaluation
  • Staff training on HR related issues
  • Negotiations
  • Provide guidance to schools on HR related issues
  • Staffing advice to the Superintendent, Executive Team and all Principals.
  • Contracts
  • Oversee the HR Department
  • Manage relationship with ASEBP - benefit usage, premiums and emerging trends
  • Job posting management
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • University degree appropriate to the position (preferably a Masters degree)
