Responsibilities
The Human Resources Assistant will be responsible for providing administrative support for a variety of Human Resources related functions. Reporting to the HR Coordinator, the Human Resource Assistant is a key member of the administrative team who is accountable for supporting the faculty and staff within the Department of Medicine (DOM).The role supports all Human Resource functions within the Department and acts as a resource by providing support and guidance related to human resources processes and practices in compliance with legislation, Western policies and standards, procedures, collectives and agreements.
Qualifications
Education:
- 2-year community college diploma in Business Administration, Human Resources or related field required
Experience:
- 2 years of experience providing administrative support for human resources and payroll functions required
- Experience providing human resources administration in a unionized environment preferred
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge of Human Resources principles and practices
- Knowledge of employment statutes (ESA, OHSA, and other relevant legislation, collective agreements and policies impacting staff) preferred
- Communication skills to clearly and effectively interact with all levels of the organization
- Verbal and written communication skills to translate information into easily understood terms, summarize information, and provide a rationale for action
- Ability to work in a manner that models best practices and upholds confidentiality standards
- Ability to apply critical thinking to evaluate information and make appropriate decisions or recommendations
- Customer service skills with a desire to achieve results in a professional and timely manner
- Detail-oriented with an ability to function and process information with high levels of accuracy
- Ability and willingness to stay abreast of technological developments
- Discretion, tact and maturity to deal with highly confidential subjects or issues
- Ability to employ a systematic and efficient approach to work
- Adapts readily and effectively to changing priorities and demands
- Intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite and with HR Information Systems (such as PeopleSoft)
- Ability to understand, interpret, and effectively communicate University guidelines, policies and practices to key stakeholders
- Ability to prioritize and organize a fluctuating workload
- Proven ability and natural inclination to develop relationships by interacting with people in a professional, respectful and diplomatic manner
- Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team to achieve department goals
- Familiarity with University policies and procedures would be an asset
