Job Summary We’re looking for a bilingual HR & Payroll Generalist whose core focus is payroll and benefits, backed by solid HR generalist skills. You’ll be a key partner in ensuring employees are paid accurately and on time, that benefits run smoothly, and that our HR practices stay compliant with Quebec employment standards. Strong payroll and benefits expertise, including Canadian year-end filings, is one of the most important parts of this role, complemented by employee relations, HR administration, and compliance work.
Key Responsibilities Payroll & Benefits Support (primary focus) Support full-cycle and year-end payroll activities, including T4 and Relevé 1 (RL-1) preparation and verification. Ensure accurate and timely processing of all HR-related payroll changes. Partner with payroll and benefits providers to resolve employee inquiries and process changes. Administer benefits programs, leave tracking, and related employee documentation. Reconcile payroll data and support audits with an accounting-minded eye for accuracy.
Employee Relations & HR Support Serve as a point of contact for employee questions on payroll, benefits, HR processes, policies, and workplace concerns. Support managers with employee relations matters, performance conversations, and corrective action processes. Assist in maintaining a positive and inclusive workplace culture. Participate in employee engagement and retention initiatives.
HR Administration & Compliance Maintain HR data, personnel files, and HRIS records with a high level of accuracy and discretion. Ensure HR and payroll administrative practices align with company policy, applicable labour laws, and Quebec employment standards. Support policy implementation and employee handbook updates. Assist with audits, reporting, and HR documentation.
Performance Management & Employee Development Support performance review cycles and employee development initiatives. Track employee training, certifications, and compliance requirements. Assist leadership with succession planning and employee growth programs.
Qualifications Education Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field. Or equivalent practical experience. Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) certification from the National Payroll Institute (or actively working toward it) is an asset. CRHA designation (or working toward one), or equivalent HR certification, is an asset.
Technical Skills Hands-on experience with Canadian year-end payroll, including T4 and Relevé 1 (RL-1) preparation and verification. 2-4 years of HR experience with direct payroll involvement (we’re open to strong candidates on either end of that range). Some accounting background or experience. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of labour standards in Quebec. In-depth knowledge of labour laws and human resources regulations. Experience with HRIS and payroll platforms (e.g., Nethris, Rippling, ADP, BambooHR). Strong communication skills, sound judgment, and the discretion to handle confidential information.
Soft Skills Curiosity and a strong desire to learn and grow. Ability to take initiative, work independently, and collaborate effectively within a cross-functional squad. Excellent multitasking capabilities. Comfortable wearing multiple hats in a growing startup, where priorities and tasks can shift as the company evolves.
Work Authorization Must be eligible to work in Canada.
Language Requirements Bilingualism (French and English) is essential, both written and spoken.
