As the Team Lead, Training and Recruitment you will be accountable for the strategic leadership, governance, and continuous improvement Calgary Transit's recruitment and operator training functions. You will support professional development, mentor emerging leaders, and foster a respectful, inclusive, and psychologically safe work environment that supports employee engagement and retention. Primary duties include:
- Provide leadership to a team of direct reports including hiring, onboarding, professional development, goal setting and performance management.
- Create training programs, curriculum, and delivery models that meet regulatory, safety, and operational requirements while supporting consistent standards.
- Ensure effective recruitment and training systems, including sufficient capacity, capability, and readiness of the operational workforce.
- Ensure the governance, effectiveness, and continuous improvement of operator and operational training programs across mode and locations including bus, shuttle, Light Rail Transit (LRT), and specialized transit.
- Monitor the effectiveness of training through performance indicators and trainee feedback.
- Oversee training capacity, instructor qualifications, certification maintenance, and alignment between training schedules and operational service needs.
- Manage complex or escalated workforce, training, and people-management issues with training and recruitment.
- Ensure recruitment processes are legally defensible and aligned with City policies, collective agreements, and workforce plans.
- Oversee and contribute to cross-functional projects that impact workforce planning, training modernization, and service readiness.
- Manage competing priorities, resource constraints, and risks while advancing organizational objectives.
Qualifications
- A completed 2-year diploma in Adult Education, Operations Management, Business Administration, Human Resources or a related field.
- At least 5 years' experience in areas such as training, safety and regulatory compliance, learning and development, high-volume recruitment or operations in public transit/transportation with 3 of those years including experience in leadership/supervision.
- Equivalent combinations of experience and education may be considered.
- Experience building and administering complex technical training of certification programs is an asset.
- Experience with provincial driver training/certification is an asset.
- Experience leading teams within unionized environment is an asset.
- Knowledge and experience with high volume recruitment, Transit Industry practices, procedures and regulations in an asset.
- An understanding of the Workers Compensation Board (WCB) Act, Traffic Safety Act, Employment Standards, Human Rights Act, and City of Calgary Code of Conduct/Respectful Workplace policy is an asset.
- In-depth knowledge and consistent application of Collective Agreements and labour relation practices
- The successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to lead, take responsibility and make informed decisions, strong communication skills, and the ability to express ideas clearly and concisely.

- Compensation: Level M1 $115,627 - 144,534 per annum
- Hours of work: Standard 35 hour work week.
- Days of work: This position works a 5-day work week with 1 day off in a 3 week cycle.
