Manager, Learning and Development
About the role
ABOUT BURKE GROUP Burke Group is Western Canada’s largest and most established graphic communications companies. For more than 120 years, we have provided print, signage, fleet graphics, installation, direct mail, fulfillment, creative and technology solutions to organizations across Canada. We operate across multiple locations and continue to grow, both organically and through acquisition.
THE OPPORTUNITY Burke Group is creating its first dedicated Learning and Development role. This is a full time, onsite position based in Edmonton. Edmonton will be the successful candidate’s home base, with travel to Burke Group locations in Calgary and Saskatoon as required to assess operations, deliver training and support implementation. We are looking for an experienced L&D professional to build a practical company wide training function from the ground up. This person will work directly with employees and operational leaders to understand how work is performed, identify gaps, establish best practices and turn those practices into effective training. This is not a traditional classroom training position, a leadership development role or a position maintaining an established program. It is a working role for someone who is comfortable getting close to the operation, learning how the business functions and creating practical solutions.
WHAT YOU WILL DO • Learn Burke’s internal systems, workflows and operational processes. • Become proficient in Burke’s management information system (MIS), including how it is used across sales, estimating, production, customer service, accounting and operations. • Assess onboarding, training and knowledge gaps across departments and locations. • Observe workflows and work with employees, managers and subject matter experts to understand how tasks are currently performed. • Identify inconsistencies, duplicated effort, undocumented knowledge and opportunities to improve efficiency. • Work with operational teams to establish practical and repeatable best practices. • Create structured onboarding programs and role specific learning plans for new and existing employees. • Develop and standardize operating procedures, job aids, checklists, process maps, videos and other practical training resources. • Deliver training to employees with different roles, experience levels and learning needs. • Establish competency standards and methods for testing employee proficiency, knowledge retention and training effectiveness. • Track who has been trained, what they have been trained on and where additional training is required. • Support the integration and training of employees joining Burke Group through acquisitions. • Support managers by giving them the tools needed to reinforce training and expectations within their teams. • Update training as processes, equipment, technology, customer requirements and company standards change.
AN ONGOING RESPONSIBILITY This role does not have a finish line. Once employees and departments have reached the required level of proficiency, you will continue to evaluate performance, confirm that knowledge is being retained and provide refresher or remedial training where required. You will maintain an ongoing training cycle for new hires, employees changing roles, newly acquired teams and existing employees affected by changes within the business. Success will be measured through stronger employee competency, faster onboarding, greater process consistency and reductions in errors, rework and missed steps.
WHAT YOU BRING • Five or more years of experience in Learning and Development, operational training, organizational development, continuous improvement or a related field. • Experience building a new L&D function, training framework or significant program from the ground up. • Strong process analysis, instructional design, facilitation and project management skills. • The ability to work effectively with frontline employees, technical specialists, managers and senior leadership. • The ability to gather knowledge from experienced employees and turn it into clear, practical and repeatable training. • Experience establishing performance measures and evaluating improvements in employee proficiency, onboarding time, productivity, quality or process consistency. • Postsecondary education in Human Resources, Education, Organizational Development, Business or a related field, or equivalent practical experience. • Ability and willingness to travel to Calgary and Saskatoon as required. Experience within manufacturing, production, multi location operations or acquisition integration is strongly preferred. Experience with learning management systems, digital training tools, skills matrices, process mapping or Lean and Six Sigma methodologies is considered an asset.
WHY BURKE GROUP? This position offers direct access to senior leadership and the opportunity to build a function that will influence how employees are trained and how work is performed across the organization. We are looking for someone who enjoys working close to the operation, creating structure and producing measurable improvements.
