About the role

Jump Recruitment, on behalf of our client, the Association of Seafood Producers is currently seeking a Manager of Collective Bargaining to join their team. This is a temporary position providing maternity leave coverage.

This role involves navigating the Fishing Industry Collective Bargaining Act (FICBA) and the Master Collective Agreement between the Association and the Fish, Food and Allied Workers-Unifor Union (FFAW-Unifor) to negotiate raw material prices and conditions of sale with the FFAW, the union representing fish harvesters.

ABOUT THE ASSOCIATION OF SEAFOOD PRODUCERS:

The Association of Seafood Producers (ASP) is a not-for-profit industry trade association representing seafood processors across Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Association was founded in November 2003 as the province’s leading voice for seafood processors and legislated industry representative for all collective bargaining. Over the years, we’ve built strong, collaborative relationships with all levels of government and industry. These partnerships have been built on mutual respect, shared goals, and a commitment to the long-term success of our shared natural resources.

We’re more than a voice. We walk the walk, working collaboratively to strengthen the future of Newfoundland and Labrador’s seafood industry – through sound public policy, sustainable practices, and responsible resource management. Together with our members, we’re building a resilient, forward-looking seafood sector – one that supports good jobs, strong communities, and sustainable fisheries for generations to come.

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

In this role, you will act as the primary negotiator and representative for fish processing companies in the province. Your key responsibilities will be:

Negotiation and Bargaining: Leading negotiations with fish harvesters/unions on price and conditions of sale for various fish species (e.g., crab, lobster) to reach collective agreements.

Arbitration and Panel Representation: Representing processors before the Standing Fish Price-Setting Panel, including presenting evidence, submitting final offers, and engaging in arbitration when negotiations deadlock.

Market Analysis and Intelligence: Analyzing international import and export market data, currency trends, and production yields to justify, determine, and set competitive prices.

Legislative Compliance: Ensuring all collective bargaining processes adhere strictly to the Fishing Industry Collective Bargaining Act and related regulations.

Advocacy and Member Relations: Advocating on behalf of member-producers to government bodies on issues relating to resource access, labour relations, and economic policy.

Fisheries Science and Sustainability: Analyzes scientific data on fish stocks to provide input on behalf of member-producers on proposed regulations, quotas, and management plans, advocating for polices that support ecological sustainability and industry stability. Overseeing certification, compliance and improvement programs such as Fishery Improvement Projects and Marine Stewardship Council (MSC).

WHAT YOU BRING:

Education: A bachelor’s or master’s degree in a related discipline. Industry Knowledge: Deep understanding of the seafood harvesting and processing sector, and global supply chains, specifically related to Newfoundland and Labrador seafood. Experience: Previous experience in industrial relations, collective bargaining, or a related role within the fishing industry. Analytical Skills: Ability to work with complex economic data, price-setting formulas, and international market reports and proficiency in statistical and econometric database software (advanced Excel, Expana, etc.) Communication and Legal Acumen: Strong communication skills for negotiating and interpreting legislative acts, report writing and oral presentation.

WHAT WE OFFER:

A competitive salary to commiserate with experience. A flexible, supportive, and collaborative work environment.

If you’re looking to be a part of building a resilient, forward-looking seafood sector – one that supports good jobs, strong communities, and sustainable fisheries for generations to come, this opportunity is for you!
