Qualifications
MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING:
- Post-secondary education in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field is required.
- Professional designation such as CEBS or GBA is preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum 5 years of directly related benefits experience or related role in a large dynamic organization is required.
- Supervisory or leadership experience is preferred.
- An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Proficiency in data analysis, reporting tools, and benefits systems is required.
- Excellent organizational, prioritizing, communication and interpersonal skills required.
- Attention to detail, strong technical, analytical and problem-solving skills are required.
- Ability to work in a team environment is required.
- Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
Key responsibilities
- Oversee day-to-day benefits operations including life insurance claims, long-term disability (LTD) claims, and leave of absence (LOA) processes.
- Monitor and manage benefit workflows to ensure timely and accurate processing.
- Identify opportunities for process improvements and assist in implementation.
- Provide vacation and peak-time coverage across all benefits positions.
- Conduct LTD benefit payment audits and manage related data.
- Perform VIP benefit data audits and troubleshoot discrepancies.
- Create, modify, and maintain reports related to benefits data.
- Collaborate with insurers and internal units (UM) on data audits and issue resolution.
- Approve electronic fund transfers (EFTs), journal entries, and working papers, where applicable.
- Support annual financial adjustments including:
- Basic Earnings Level (BEL) increases
- LTD maximum increases
- Employer administrative fee increases
- Group Term Life (GFT Life) increases
- Annual LTD cost-of-living adjustments (COLA)
- Review eligibility for casual, seasonal, and sessional employees.
- Manage LOA invoicing processes and ensure accuracy.
- Respond to complex employee inquiries and benefit-related situations.
- Act as a resource and escalation point for benefits staff.
- Assist with benefit enrollment, changes, and retirement plan administration.
- Communicate benefit information clearly and effectively to employees.
- Ensure compliance with employment laws, union agreements, and internal policies.
- Participate in the review and development of benefit policies and procedures.
- Support implementation of plan design and workflow changes.
- Assist in preparing benefits-related reports for leadership.
- Liaise with insurance providers and vendors to resolve issues and optimize offerings.
- Other duties as assigned.
